Empowering non-speaking

In our journey with non-speaking autism, guided by our understanding of the communication needs, we embarked on a mission to ease pathways for non-speakers. We want to amplify the authentic voices of non-speakers and defy any skepticism of the contributions non-speakers can and do make. Born of this desire, and the understanding of the key role integrating all the learning channels (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Tactile- VAKT) and sensorially being ready to access them, VAKTA the app was created.

The uniqueness of VAKTA lies in its innovative features that address crucial challenges faced by the community. One standout aspect is our ability to securely back up communication on the device or cloud, providing a time-stamped record of work and unequivocal ownership. This feature eliminates doubt regarding the origin of the communication, ensuring that the nonspeaking individual receives proper credit for their words without the risk of undue influence from communication partners.

VAKTA also offers extensive customization options to suit diverse user preferences and needs. Users can adapt keyboard layouts and access pre-designed keyboards for enhanced usability. Customization extends to background colors, letter sizes, and font options tailored for readability, including considerations for individuals with dyslexia.

The app also incorporates a time delay function to assist learners in mastering spelling techniques and accommodates those who benefit from sensory input during typing. To minimize distractions, the display area for typed-out text is intentionally kept compact, with additional features like light and dark modes enhancing user experience and accessibility.

In this iteration of the app, we seek to serve intermediate to open communicators who are pursuing academic goals. We do have some features that will be useful for beginners to adapt, but the letter board will be the first step for most.

As we continue to evolve and grow, we remain dedicated to creating more learning apps that aid non-speakers and we seek input from the community to create these. Our vision of a world where every non-speaker finds the tools they need to truly be the speaker/communicator (VAKTA in Sanskrit) regardless of their sensory-motor challenges. At VAKTA, our story is one of unwavering commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. We hope VAKTA can serve as a platform for expression that also fosters independence and dignity.
